Cygnet Harrow ward opens as part of £4m upgrade

Cygnet Hospital Harrow has opened a new acute mental health ward for men, part of a £4m renovation aimed at expanding emergency mental health services at the London Road facility.

The West Ward, which opened on 17 October, is the first of two new wards, with the Roxeth Ward Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit set to follow later this year.

The renovation project, which includes modernisation and enhancements to the hospital’s facilities, aims to expand emergency provision in the area so that patients can be treated closer to home.

Co-production played a central role in the development of the new services, with input from local Experts by Experience—individuals with lived experience of inpatient care—helping shape the design of the wards.

In addition to physical upgrades, the hospital has launched a Quality Improvement Project that includes leadership changes and additional training for staff.

Both the West Ward and the forthcoming Roxeth Ward will be staffed by a multi-disciplinary team, including psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists. The focus will be on ensuring a safe and timely transition for patients to the most appropriate care setting.

Hospital manager Ricky Mugwagwa said: ‘I’m delighted that we are expanding our emergency mental health services to be able to support even more people, closer to home. We recognise how the environment is a crucial element in the delivery of positive outcomes for service users, their safety, and the safety of staff and the wider community. The developments at Cygnet Hospital Harrow have been a collaborative effort, and we put service users at the heart of our planning, utilising feedback from those with lived experience to provide a service that is compassionate, meets their needs, and provides the optimum environment for high-quality care.’
